Leaf Dances

Botanical Painting Meets Hard-Edge Abstraction

Leaf Dances is an exhibition of acrylic paintings that mix botanical detail with hard-edge abstraction. Canadian artist Bob Young, BFA (York University), has collaborated with Art Noise Gallery in Kingston, Ontario, to present 18 paintings — ten of them comprising a tightly related series, Oak Dances.

Leaf Dances began as a physical exhibition in Art Noise Gallery. On March 6, 2020, Young and Art Noise held an opening event in which two of the paintings sold. Also during the opening, composer and jazz saxophonist David Mott played a piece composed in response to Young's paintings.

Barely a week after opening — and due to the COVID19 crisis — the Leaf Dances show had to be shut to the public. But although Art Noise closed its physical gallery, the company created a virtual gallery for the exhibition, including the ability for visitors to purchase works online. Leaf Dances is slated to run until April 17; hopefully, Art Noise's physical gallery will be open again by then, but the virtual gallery presents the paintings for the time being.
