Just Across the Causeway

Toronto, CANADA - Converting live performance to digital media has proven a difficult medium to master, but this new Canadian play by Natalia Bushnik translates beautifully. Though it deals with heavy themes such as familial loss, there are enough turns of sharp wit to make this a truly dynamic and entertaining show-going experience. Take an evening to press play and let your mind do the staging.

From the Playwright, Natalia Bushnik:

‘Just Across the Causeway’ is a new play written and directed by Canadian artist, Natalia Bushnik, featuring music composed by Kathleen Welch. This radio play adaptation was initially produced through the National Theatre School's #ArtApart Program - an emergency fund for emerging artists - after barriers from the coronavirus resulted in cancelled plans of staging the show in the Summer of 2020. It received financial support from the Canada Council for the Arts, via the Digital Strategy Fund, and the Toronto Arts Council.

The story follows four sisters growing up on Cape Breton Island in the 1970's. It explores how passion and suppression send the girls in different directions, and how a tragic loss brings them back together. The play examines themes of cyclical trauma, small-town boredom, and the complicated bonds of motherhood, and sisterhood. Featuring performances by Natalia Bushnik, Kathleen Welch, Andrea Meister, and Holly DeJoseph. Sound Design by Jonathan Brown. Cover Art by Terrah Nitkin.
