One Medium to Another

Anastasia Lemberg-Lvova (Tallinn) & Denis Serrano (Mexico City)

Call and response: Two visual artists of different disciplines create new work inspired by the other. Looking at this work is like reading a choose-your-own-adventure novel. You can spend time looking at each image on it’s own, or view it as a collection, imagining what elements of each piece inspired the other. The pieces are independently beautiful, but also a story of process and international conversation. View how you wish, but then be sure to check out the videos from each artist, talking about international collaboration and COVID.

Denis Serrano was born in 1990, she is living and working in Mexico City. Denis’ work explores the hidden undercurrent of challenging subjects such as isolation; mental health; misogyny and domestic violence. She’s interested to make research and open discussions about these topics mainly through photography.

From the artist:

I had the fortune to know the body of work of Anastasia Lemberg-Lvova, a young painting artist living in Estonia. I found an amazing opportunity to give me the chance to work with a different language that personally I used to work: with oil paintings vibran colors. I also connected with Anastasia’s aware of generalization in society.

In the pandemic context, I wouldn’t be able to get out with my camera in the street looking for esthetics, stories and faces, but I found them in a different way by getting into Anastasia’s work. And I tried embroidery, photo prints collage and watercolor, all domestic techniques as a free act of dealing with lockdown, I was also kind of seeing myself in those Anastasia’s portraits.

I think Anastasia felt free to be attracted to some of my pictures, it’s exciting to see added a new level on my work through Anastasia’s point of view, her painting exploration and her own way to live art.

Anastasia Lemberg-Lvova’s projects combine her awe for the aesthetics of oil painting and her need to bring the individual to the forefront of a society preoccupied with generalisation. She uses elements of social design, vibrant colour and participatory activities to engage the public in a reflection on the potential and the value of one person.

Originally from Moscow, Lemberg-Lvova has lived and worked in multiple European countries. She holds a BA in Fine Arts and has received training in Belgium, the Netherlands, Russia and Estonia, where she is currently based. Her works are in private collections in Belgium, Estonia, France, the UK and Russia.
